Who’s the best lipreader of all?

TinTin's avatarI look so I can hear....

Lipreading has become a rather commercial activity in the last few years. I’ve been asked to lipread celebrities at royal weddings, the Royals at royal weddings, babies and parents at royal christenings, criminals, sports people, and even the unsuspecting public.

I was born deaf and I have always been a lipreader. I am now totally deaf with 2 cochlear implants, yet I retain my lipreading skills. I am able to lipread most people I meet, lipread sideways, and even fool a lot of people into thinking I am a hearing person. I believe lipreading is not a science, it is an art. An art I have honed over many years, in many situations, in many different countries with various accents. My life experience of travelling around the world and “getting on with it” has served to make me a better lipreader. I can even lipread in Spanish, Japanese and Arabic.

Dollar General Store: Cashier Asks For Hearing Dog To Leave

wanda4848's avatarDeaf Lady's Blog On General Topics

douglas in airportWhenever I go out shopping I always bring Douglas my hearing dog along. He is here to help to notify me of sounds I can’t hear at home. Without my hearing aids on I am completely deaf. In most places we go to there are usually never any problems. At the stores people spend a lot of time admiring the dog. They usually come up to me and tell he how cute he looks. He puts smiles on people’s faces everywhere I go.

Anyway I decided to stop at the Dollar General store yesterday. Douglas had his orange hearing dog vest on as we went inside. Also I always hold onto the leash and have him close to me whenever we go shopping. When I was nearly done shopping, a cashier followed us in the store. I was wondering why she was not up front working. All of a sudden…

An Artistic Look at My Hearing Aids

LipreadingMom's avatarLipreading Mom

It took me two years before I’d let this much of myself show.
My bottle blonde hair
and palette of cosmetics
usually help me blend in with the other moms
who drive their children to sporting events
on a warm summer afternoon.
I turn the wheel,
hoping to avoid the stark reflection
that stares back in the rearview mirror.

A profile of me with the low ponytail says it all:
There is something different about me.

I am wearing hearing aids.

This is who I am.
I am slowly going deaf.
This was meant to happen,
to help me hear beyond what comes through
flawed ears.

– From the poem ‘Different’ by Lipreading Mom Shanna Groves

Sound Advice for New Interpreters

“Sound Advice for New Interpreters” from across the pond…

The Interpreter Diaries's avatarThe Interpreter Diaries

I truly admire bloggers who manage to keep up their blogging schedule through the summer months. And I doubly admire one blog in particular for having made a number of valuable contributions to the interpreting blogosphere this summer.

I’m referring to Life in LINCS, a blog written by the members of the Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies (LINCS) at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. If you follow the Interpreter Diaries on Facebook or Twitter, you will have seen me sharing a number of their posts over the past few weeks.

I particularly liked the three-part series “From gown to booth – Turning your degree into a job” on how to get started in the interpreting profession:

Hurdle nº 1: Experience required

Hurdle nº 2: Becoming a paid interpreter

Working for an international institution

So thanks very much to the people at Life in LINCS for all the great summer…
